Benefit programs in Louisiana (2026)
For families in Louisiana we check every federal program below, then map your state's own programs and point you to the office that runs each one.
We don't put a dollar figure on most of Louisiana's own programs yet. Those amounts depend on rules we haven't finished checking against official sources. What you get instead is the program, its official source, and who to call. Federal amounts are computed for every state, including yours.
Louisiana families can get Medicaid help with care at home through 7 Medicaid home and community-based services waivers that pay for care in your own home instead of a nursing facility. Louisiana also has a confirmed property-tax relief program for seniors, the Homestead Exemption. Its confirmed benefit is quoted in the program's own official wording further down this page. Louisiana also runs a LIHEAP energy-assistance program that covers heating and cooling costs together. Figures checked against official sources, last on 2026-08-05.

Does NOT apply to municipal (city) taxes. Limited to one exemption per owner. Foundation on which the senior freeze and veteran exemptions are stacked. Retirement income tax
Social Security in Louisiana: Louisiana fully exempts Social Security benefits from state income tax regardless of income; any Social Security taxed on the federal return is subtracted on the Louisiana return. Louisiana levies a flat 3% individual income tax effective January 1, 2025 (previously graduated 1.85%-4.25%).
Pensions, IRAs, and 401(k)s: Government pensions are fully exempt: federal civil-service and military retirement, Railroad Retirement, and all Louisiana state/parish/municipal government retirement systems (Teachers', LASERS, sheriffs', firefighters', police, etc., including DROP disbursements under Title 11) are excluded from Louisiana taxable income. Other/private retirement income (IRA, 401(k), private pensions, annuities) qualifies for the annual retirement income exclusion of up to $12,000 per person for individuals age 65 or older -- increased from $6,000 effective January 1, 2025, and CPI-indexed annually thereafter (La. R.S. 47:44.1).
