About Get Bearings

We started Get Bearings because one of us went looking for help finding care for a family member and found almost nothing. No map, no clear answer on what things cost, no straight talk on what he actually qualified for. Just a list of phone numbers, a countdown clock from a hospital discharge planner, and a referral service that turned out to be paid by the facility it was sending him to.

That's the piece nobody tells you. Most of the "free help" in this industry gets paid by the facility, not by you, and that cost is baked into what you end up paying. We built Get Bearings to work the other way. We tell families what they actually qualify for, in plain language, using a system that pulls from real government sources instead of guessing. And we never charge a family a referral fee to find or book care, ever.

For facilities, it means a direct way to reach the families looking for you, without paying a middleman for every lead.

We're a small team. Two founders, one American, one Estonian, both based in Tallinn, Estonia. We're not backed by a big referral network, and we're not trying to be the biggest directory in the space. We're trying to be the one families and facilities can actually trust.

Who we are

Brent

Co-Founder & CEO

Brent spent eleven years building customer experience and technical support teams inside SaaS companies, most of it hands-on with the kind of complicated, high-stakes support that doesn't forgive shortcuts. He led member support for a telehealth platform connecting patients with doctors, built a customer solutions team from scratch for a smart lock hardware company, and spent years deep in the technical weeds of construction and manufacturing software, debugging integrations, learning systems from the inside out.

Brent is American, and now lives and works in Tallinn, Estonia, where Get Bearings is built. But the company didn't start in a boardroom. It started when Brent had to find senior care for his own family, with no experience in the industry and no idea where to even begin. He remembers the exact feeling of being handed a list and a deadline, and being expected to make a decision that big with almost no real information. That experience is the whole reason this company exists. Everything Get Bearings does differently traces back to a question Brent asked himself in the middle of that search: why is nobody just telling people the truth about what's available and what it costs?

"I built the company I wish had existed when my own family needed it."

Meelis

Co-Founder & CTO

Meelis is the person who took Brent's experience and turned it into something real. He's spent thirteen years on the technical side of B2B software, most recently as the engineer other engineers call when something breaks in a way nobody else can explain. Before Get Bearings, he founded his own company deploying AI tools for small businesses in Estonia, built on two rules he doesn't bend on: customer data never leaves the EU, and nothing happens automatically without a person approving it first.

That same instinct shapes how Get Bearings is built. Meelis designed the system, chose every piece of the stack, and built the platform himself, including how carefully a family's personal and financial information gets handled. He's Estonian, and he'll be the first to say the deep knowledge of the US care system sits with Brent, not him. His job is asking hard questions until Brent's experience becomes something a system can actually reason over, accurately, every time.

Outside of work, Meelis builds things for the fun of seeing whether they work. In 2026 he built an automated prediction system for a World Cup pool just to see if he could get it right without ever picking a scoreline by hand. It finished second out of roughly 600 entries, and beat the entry someone else built using ChatGPT, which he says was the comparison he actually cared about.

"I get to build the thing that makes sure families get the real answer, not a guess."
