Benefit programs in Arizona (2026)

For families in Arizona we check every federal program below, then map your state's own programs and point you to the office that runs each one.

For some of Arizona's own programs below we already have a vetted maximum from the official source. Those show "Up to $X/year". For programs without a vetted cap, we describe the program and link its official page while we finish computed-depth verification. Federal amounts are computed for every state, including yours.

Arizona families can get Medicaid help with care at home through a statewide 1115 demonstration, not named waivers. Arizona has a confirmed property-tax relief program for seniors, the Property Tax Refund (Credit) Claim - Arizona Form 140PTC, worth up to $502 a year. Arizona also runs a federally funded LIHEAP energy-assistance program that helps pay heating bills for qualifying households. Figures checked against official sources, last on 2026-08-05.

Does Arizona Medicaid pay for care at home?

Yes. Arizona covers Medicaid home care through a statewide 1115 demonstration rather than named §1915(c) waivers, so there are no waiver titles to list. That is a difference in how the state organizes the benefit, not an absence of it. We have no confirmed dollar figure for what Arizona pays toward home care. Contact Arizona's Medicaid agency.

Retirement income tax

Social Security in Arizona: Arizona fully exempts Social Security benefits and Railroad Retirement benefits. Amounts included in federal adjusted gross income are 100% subtracted from Arizona gross income, regardless of the taxpayer's income level (A.R.S. 43-1022).

Pensions, IRAs, and 401(k)s: Arizona levies a flat 2.5% individual income tax (2025 tax year). Retirement income treatment: (1) Military/uniformed-services retirement pay is 100% exempt (subtracted in full, effective tax year 2021 onward). (2) Pensions from Arizona state government, Arizona political subdivisions/local governments, and U.S. federal civil-service qualify for a subtraction of up to $2,500 per taxpayer per year. (3) Private-employer pensions, traditional IRA distributions, and 401(k) distributions are fully taxable to the same extent as on the federal return - Arizona provides NO general age-based or income-based exclusion for these. (4) Pension income from other states' governments does not qualify for the $2,500 subtraction and is fully taxable in Arizona.
